Mukuru Slum Action Research: Outcome Mapping

Mukuru Slum Action Research: Outcome Mapping

University of Nairobi (CURI) and partners recently held an Outcome Mapping Workshop from 12th to 15th March at the Thayu Roundvales Hotel, Limuru. The purpose of the workshop was to refine the target outcomes overall strategy for a joint research, code named “Wanavijiji Action Research Project” aimed at Improving Access to Justice and Basic Services in the Informal Settlementsof Nairobi.

Wanavijiji Action Research is a unique project that builds on the grassroots transformation work of Akiba Mashinani (NGO) working with Muungano community (Wanavijiji) in Mukuru Informal settlement, Nairobi, with support of University of Nairobi’s urban studio through action research, Katiba Institute, a legal aid organization providing regal support to the urban poor, and Strathmore University, school of Economics working on micro enterprise economic modelling.

In the first step the project aims to understand the situation and complexity that underlies Nairobi’s informal settlements. In the next phases the research study initiative will be used to trigger action from households, neighborhoods, city and national level actors to address specific governance, security and justice issues with the informal settlements

Outcome Mapping is a new approach which recognizes that development is essentially about people relating to each other and their environment. The originality of this approach lies in its shift away from assessing the products of a program to focus on changes in behavior, relationships, actions, and activities in the people, groups, and organizations it works with directly. In doing so, Outcome Mapping debunks many of the myths about measuring impact. It will help a program be specific about the actors it targets, the changes it expects to see, and the strategies it employs and, as a result, be more effective in terms of the results it achieves.

Outcome Mapping establishes a vision of the human, social, and environmental betterment to which the program hopes to contribute and then focuses monitoring and evaluation on factors and actors within its sphere of influence. The program's contributions to development are planned and assessed based on its influence on the partners with whom it is working to effect change.
